BUSINESS

ACCOUNTING I

Accounting I introduces concepts and principles based on a double-entry system of maintaining the electronic and manual financial records for a sole proprietorship, partnership and corporation. It includes analyzing business transactions, journalizing, posting, and preparing worksheets and financial statements.

 Recommended Prerequisites: Keyboarding

Suggest Concurrent with: Algebra II or Geometry or permission of the accounting instructor

BANKING AND FINANCE

Banking and Finance is a course designed to challenge the student with real banking and financial situations through a partnership with a local financial institution that would bring resources of mentors, seminars, and hands on experience with day-to-day operations. Completion of this course will provide students with a basis for secondary education in finance and special job skills in banking and financial institutions. Ethical issues will be presented in the course.

Personal Finance

Personal Finance is a course designed to help students understand the impact of individual choices on occupational goals and future earnings potential. Real world topics covered will include income, money management, spending and credit, as well as saving and investing.  Students will design personal and household budgets; simulate use of checking and saving accounts; demonstrate knowledge of finance, debt, and credit management; and evaluate and understand insurance and taxes.  This course will provide a foundational understanding for making informed personal financial decisions.

The co-curricular student organization will provide students with opportunities for leadership development, personal growth, and school/community involvement.

Pre-Requisite(s):    None

Financial Planning

Financial Planning is a course designed to develop skills in the use of financial principles in making business decisions. Students will research job qualifications and employment opportunities in finance. The course includes a study of the allocation of financial resources, the effects of finance and credit institutions on the business community and the impact of financial decisions on the consumer market. Ethical issues will be presented in this course.

SERVICE LEARNING

Students are taught job-related skills, such as resume writing and interview skills.  They are placed at career-related sites learning about their careers of interest.  Fridays are spent in the classroom.  School and community service are emphasized.  Students learn to apply academic knowledge to solve real-life problems.  Through their experiences, students are given the opportunity to become active, responsible citizens. Students are selected based on an application and teacher recommendation.  The student must have not only a C average, but also good attendance and a good attitude.  This course is only for seniors.

 

COMPUTER EDUCATION
 

Advanced Computer-Aided Drafting

Advanced Computer-Aided Drafting is a course in which students will learn to use a CAD program to create engineering drawings including plan drawings, assembly drawings, welding and process drawings, cross sections, 3D representations, and bills of materials. The course consists primarily of individual drawing projects, with some group projects. Emphasis is on drawing projects of increasing complexity.

 

Computer Aided Drafting

Computer Aided Drafting is a course in which students learn the basic concepts of scale drawings and orthographic projections by making simple two- and three-dimensional drawings using manual drafting tools and computer-aided drafting (CAD). Course content will enable students to make the transition into the use of CAD software by having them make increasingly sophisticated drawings. Student work in teams will culminate in a class project to create a complete set of construction and assembly drawings for a mechanical product.

 

 DESKTOP PUBLISHING

The student will apply keying, formatting, typography, and layout and design skill in developing electronic publishing documents. The student will develop skills in electronic publishing design, layout, composition, and photo journalism. Content provides the opportunity to acquire marketable skills and to prepare for gainful employment and or entry into postsecondary education in the graphic communications industry. Laboratory facilities and experiences simulate those found in the graphic communications industry.

INTEGRATED INPUT TECHNOLOGY

This is a capstone course in which students will learn necessary skills in problem solving using current and emerging integrated technology to include a variety of input technologies such as advanced keyboarding, scanning, speech recognition, handwriting recognition, and the use of a mouse in the production of mailable business documents. The course focuses on student choice, accountability and competency. Students work toward the attainment of high-level employable competencies in areas which may include (but are not limited to) integrated software applications, computer systems, communication systems, networking, ethical issues, human relations, leadership, self-management, and workplace management. Students may choose areas of specialization and achieve industry certification in areas such as word processing, spreadsheet applications, database design and management, multimedia presentations, schedule and contact management, etc. This course may articulate to post–secondary education.

KEYBOARDING

The student will apply basic skills in operating a computerized keyboard by using the touch system and other input technologies to produce mailable business and academic documents. Student will prepare business and academic report, etc. Mailability standards relate to keying, formatting, grammar, punctuation, capitalization, spelling, content, typography and layout and design. Using special features of the software, the student will be able to format academic and business reports.

Interactive Multimedia Presentations

The student will apply keying, typography, layout and design skills in this course. The student will be proficient in using interactive multimedia tools to develop electronic presentations. Creative design, persuasive communications, and language arts skills are applied through research, evaluation, validation, written, and oral communication. Typography, layout and design guidelines are applied. Copyright laws and ethical practices are reinforced in creating and formatting various presentations that require imported data/graphics, digital, audio, and video clips. Team development will also be stressed as students work on multimedia project(s). Laboratory facilities and experiences simulate those found in business and industry.

Computer Applications

This course is designed to develop computer technology skills. Students will use a variety of computer software and hardware tools and features of an electronic information network. Students will explore the, historical, social and ethical issues of using computer technology. The students will develop skills that will assist them with efficient production; accurate production analysis; management of information and design and presentation of a multimedia project.

Career Management Success

Career Management Success is a core course for career clusters. The course provides students with tools for achieving success in their academic, work, and personal lives. Course content emphasizes the basic skills and knowledge needed for employment success, as identified by industry and supported by relevant national standards. All course content is presented in a real-world context, providing concrete opportunities for developing personal and career goals, effective communication skills, teamwork abilities, and successful work attitudes.  Upon completion of the course, students will be able to complete the Professional Development Program Level I and Level II of SkillsUSA or other degree programs in other career and technical youth organizations.

 

eBusiness Communications

eBusiness Communication is the study of oral, written, and electronic communications in a global society. Components of communication include the sender, the message, the receiver, the feedback, and the channel. The purposes of communication are to build goodwill, persuade, obtain or share information, and build self-esteem.

The course will address the use of Internet developing concepts, particularly those related to Web browsers, navigators, search engines, on-line communication methods, home and Web site design concepts, transfer of data, downloading files, security procedures and Internet navigational tools. The student will choose and use appropriate tools when completing Internet applications using the Internet for research and validation of research data for written and oral business communications. Emphasis will be placed on electronic research, security issues, ethics, business report writing, business correspondence, enhancement of oral presentations with electronic media and communications applying current technology.

Web Design Essentials

This course, which is designed as the first level of Web Design, will teach students workplace and leadership skills for advancement into the Web Design Application course. Keying and layout and design skills are essential. Students will develop Internet research techniques for business; acquire navigation mapping skills; effectively use a Web site; study fundamental concepts of digital commerce transaction security; examine related social, legal and ethical issues; study electronic financial management practices, and integrate the elements of Web Design.

Web Design Essentials focuses on the language, structure, and essential concepts and principles of page layout and design and the ethics related to the production of Internet presentations. Typography layout, and design guidelines will be applied in the design of Web pages. Upon completion of the course, a student will be able to evaluate, implement and apply the use of technology in Digital Commerce and Web Page Design for business.

This course requires a computerized workstation for each student with Internet access, markup language software and any Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) Web Design Software.

FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES

 Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) is a comprehensive, foundation course designed to assist students in developing core knowledge and skills needed for successful life planning and management. Content includes human development; family and parenting education; resource management; housing and living environments; nutrition and foods; textiles and apparel; leadership development; and career preparation. A unique focus is on the management of families, work, and their interrelationships. The course provides a foundation for further study in specialized related career areas. Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), the cocurricular student organization, provides students with opportunities for leadership development, personal growth, and school/community involvement.

CHILD AND LIFESPAN DEVELOPMENT

Course Description: Child and Lifespan Development prepares students to understand the physical, social, emotional and intellectual growth and development throughout the lifespan. Experiences such as laboratory observations, job shadowing, service learning and laboratory participation will enhance the learning process.  Instructional content includes child development theories and research; prenatal development; infants and toddlers; preschool years; middle childhood; adolescence; adulthood; geriatrics; death and dying; careers; and leadership, citizenship and teamwork.

 FASHION DESIGN AND MERCHANDISING

Course Description: Fashion Design and Merchandising is a specialized course designed to introduce students to the world of fashion. Areas of study include fashion fundamentals, principles and elements of design; career options and preparation; product selection and maintenance; and consumer strategies. Instruction includes academic integration and technology applications.

 NUTRITION AND FOODS

Course Description: Nutrition and Foods is a specialized course designed to help students understand the nutrient value, appetite appeal, social significance and cultural aspects of food. Students will examine the role of nutrition in the prevention of health conditions, such as obesity, and the promotion of optimal body performance throughout the life span. The course offers students opportunities to develop skills in the safe and sanitary selection, preparation, storing, and serving of food; meal management to meet individual and family nutrition needs across the life span; and optimal use of food resources. Instruction includes academic integration and technology applications. Careers in nutrition and food industries will be explored.

Course Description: Housing is a specialized course designed to prepare students to understand the influences affecting housing decisions. Emphasis is on using available resources effectively to meet individual housing needs. The integration of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) provides students with the opportunity for leadership development, personal growth and school/community involvement.

 Textiles and Apparel

Course Description: Textiles and Apparel is a specialized course designed to build foundational skills in the selection, production, and alteration of textile and apparel products. Areas of study include social, psychological and physiological influences; fibers and fabrics; textile design and production influences; manufacturing systems; and career options and preparation. Instruction includes academic integration and technology applications.

 FAMILY AND PARENTING

Course Description: Family and Parenting focuses on the significance of the family as a basic unit of society and the impact of parenting roles and responsibilities on the wellbeing of individuals and society. Instructional content includes family, individuals, and society; relationships; communication; multiple roles; parenting roles and responsibilities; careers; and leadership, citizenship, and teamwork.

 INTERIOR DESIGN

Course Description: Interior Design is a specialized course focusing on the interior of living environments. The course includes instruction in the fundamentals of interior design; the application of skills, knowledge, and design principles to the living environment; interior design occupations and careers; universal and “green” design; and professional and marketing skills. Instruction includes academic integration and technology applications.

TRI-COUNTY CAREER TECHNICAL SCHOOL

 All courses at Tri-County Career Technical School are two year programs unless otherwise stated in the course descriptions.

 AIR CONDITIONING/REFRIGERATION AND HEATING

            After completing this two year program, students should be able to get into heating /and cooling, refrigeration, or a maintenance field.  Students will also acquire skills necessary to become electricians.

 COSMETOLOGY

                The mission of the Cosmetology program is to educate in the art of cosmetology and encourage the development of creative hair and nail design.  Graduates will be knowledgeable in the methodology and practical skills necessary to pass the State Board of Cosmetology Examination for licensure.  This course includes the following skills: salon management, hair designer, nail technician, and skin care specialist. This course may be taken for three years.

 Dietary Manager

                This course is designed to train students for gainful employment in various types of food service operations.  Skills taught include the following: equipment use, recipe reading, food preparation techniques, cake decoration, and kitchen safety and sanitation.  This course may be taken for three years.

 Nursing Education / Anatomy & Physiology

                Health Science Technology classes are preparatory classes for all health professions.  This two year course will cover the following areas: nursing education, environmental services, health science education, health care management, and anatomy and physiology.  Students who complete this course will be able to obtain entry-level positions or continue their education at a two or four year institution.

Machine Tool Technology

                This course trains students in set-up and operation of all types of machine shop equipment.  Skills taught include blueprint reading, usage of all measuring tools, and marketable employment competencies. Approximately 85% of the student’s time in class will be spent operating equipment.

BUILDING CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY

                Students are taught rough framing, finish work, roofing, masonry, plumbing, blueprint reading, and general electrical wiring.  This is a two year program.

 WELDING

                This course instructs the students to cutting with oxyfuel and plasma arc.  Students will also be introduced to arc and mig welding.  As the student progresses more advanced welding skills will be taught. Welding students are also instructed in basic mathematics, electrical fundamentals and basic industrial maintance.
